Trans Day of Remembrance
Details
The Transgender Day of Remembrance is about remembering the memory and legacy of trans individuals who have lost their lives to transphobic violence, and asks us to offer support to those around us who fall under the Trans umbrella. The Trans community is facing a lot of unjust scrutiny, forcing many people back into "the closet" and are not able to identify how they feel most comfortable out of fear for their safety, or even their lives.
In the Talmud, there are six genders that we as Jews recognize: Zachar, Nekevah, Androgynos, Tumtum, Aylonit, and Saris. Today, we honor those folks who fall under the umbrella of Androgynos, Tumtum, Aylonit, and Saris. Many people who fall under the trans umbrella often feel ostracized due to their gender presentation, but we as Jews should celebrate the lives and legacy of those who fall outside of the traditional gender spectrum.
Let us practice our inner tikkun olam and give thanks to those who have given their lives to supporting and uplifting individuals in marginalized communities, such as this one.
