Building Bridges and Belonging: The Work of our Jewish Adjacent Committee

This article first appeared in our Sept/Oct '25 edition of The Bulletin
At Congregation Beth Emeth, we celebrate the beauty and diversity of the membership of our congregation - and that includes the many people in our lives who are “Jewish adjacent.” Whether you’re a non-Jewish partner, parent, grandparent, spouse, friend, or someone simply curious about Jewish life, you are part of the CBE family. The Jewish Adjacent Committee was created with you in mind, to explore leadership opportunities, support, and inclusion in every aspect of congregational life.
This committee grew out of heartfelt conversations - stories shared over Oneg cookies and coffee, questions asked in quiet moments during services, and the growing awareness that many in our congregation were seeking connection, understanding, and a sense of belonging within Jewish spaces. Our goal is simple but powerful: to provide opportunities for Jewish adjacent members to be elected to leadership positions on our Board of Trustees.
We’ve informed the congregation of what the term Jewish adjacent means and held small informal discussion groups with Jewish adjacent members. We’ve learned what drew them in - and what makes them feel a part of our community.
One of the most beautiful teachings in Judaism comes from Pirkei Avot: “Who is wise? The one who learns from everyone.” In that spirit, we are committed to learning from each other - to listening, honoring, and growing together.
If you or someone you know might benefit from connecting with this committee, please reach out. Whether you’ve been here for years or are just finding your way in, there’s a place for you at Beth Emeth - and we’re glad you’re here.
Thank you!
